5 years ago I decided to do something that I didn’t know would change my life- I joined Team in Training and ran my first marathon in San Francisco in support of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and quickly learned that through TNT, we can make a difference.
Everyone knows I run a lot of races but none mean as much to me as the races I run with TNT.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is doing more than any other nonprofit to advance cutting edge research and cures, is funding more than 300 different cancer research projects, and gave $237 million last year to help patients afford their treatments. And NONE of that would be possible without the efforts of Team in Training participants all across the country.
I’m back with Team in Training for my 8th season and 35th half marathon, Rock n’ Roll Nashville. This season, I have pledged to raise $2000 for the cause and train six days a week from now until the race in order to help find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I know it’s been a while since I’ve written a post but something happened. Something BIG. After 10+ years of being a stay-at-home-mom, I got a job. A full time job. That’s a lot of hours away from home, away from my kids, away from the free will that allowed me to run whenever I wanted and to write blog posts whenever I wanted. It was a big transition at first- for me and my entire family- but now, after 5 months, I’m finally getting into a good grove.
The Laura of 5 months ago was so dedicated to running and working out and setting goals and running race after race after race with abandon (when I wasn’t injured, that is) and the Laura of right now is finding some challenge in staying as dedicated. Depending on my life/work balance at the moment, my motivation tends to wane and sleeping to all of 6:30am is often so much more appealing than getting up at 4:45am to get my miles in. Last December, the Nike women’s race series announced that it was dropping its San Francisco half marathon, so this is not new news to the running world by any means. I’ve had nearly 7 months to get used to the idea, but that doesn’t mean I’m not still angry at Nike because I AM still angry and after running that race for 5 consecutive years in a row (plus Nike DC its inaugural year so 6 times total), I expected a little more explanation from Nike as to why they made that decision and took away my lucky #7 and what they were going to do to replace the race here in California, but noooooooo… no reasons, no future plans for a U.S. race, no more tuxedo-ed firemen, no more running for Tiffany’s… grrrrrr!!! <shakes fist in air>
In my 41 years of life I have learned that all things, especially the good things, do come to an end. I get that. Doesn’t make it any less annoying knowing that truth but I also realize the other side of the coin- be sure to enjoy while it lasts.
And when it comes to the Nike Women’s Marathon, I certainly did just that…
Round 5 of the Nike Women’s Marathon, my fourth in SF, accomplished this past Sunday and I am happy to report that it went SO MUCH better than I expected given my litany of injuries this past year. I had such a great time and was reminded of how much I really and truly love running.
If you are familiar with the Nike race series, you know that this year they changed everything for their San Francisco race for the first time in 10 years. They removed the full marathon and completely changed the course. I ran my first full at Nike SF in 2011 and once was just fine (as it was SO AMAZINGLY DIFFICULT!), ran their SF half in 2012 and again in 2013 so I was eager to see just how different it would be this year.
Going into this race, I was more than nervous and worried. My last two halfs (The Town’s Half Marathon and the 2nd half of the San Francisco Marathon) went horribly. I hit the wall at mile 4 and every part of my body hurt and screamed, “QUIT! QUIT! QUIT!” This Sunday however, with the race I have been obsessed with even before I ever started running, I felt absolutely great and loved every single minute of it! Continue reading →

Last week I celebrated two important milestones: 3 years with Team in Training and 3 years of writing running4thereason.com– happy runniversary/blogiversary to me! In fact, this blog was born because of TNT as I wanted to document the process of fundraising for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society while training for my first marathon. When my first season with the team ended, I stayed on, became a mentor, continued to fund-raise, and ran another marathon… then seven more half marathons with the team after that.
The cliche “absence makes the hear grow fonder” is so very true! My 6th season with TNT just concluded and I really miss seeing my team, manager, and coaches on a regular basis! I am not on the team right now because of my injury but still wanted to relay the “why” behind my dedication to TNT & LLS in order to encourage and motivate others to join up and run for this stellar organization.
Be it sunny, windy, snowing, or raining, I won’t mind as these miles are all for Team in Training!
Earlier this year, I was lucky to be chosen to represent the San Luis Obispo (SLO) Marathon as a race ambassador so I happily registered for the half marathon and went on with my training, doing all the “normal” things us runners do to get ready for a half marathon. Unfortunately, disaster struck in early March when I was diagnosed with patellofemoral/meniscus tear/MCL sprain and, as of today, it’s been 58 days, 8 hours, 32 minutes and 12 seconds since my last run, but who’s counting?
As soon as I was given the diagnosis and told “no more running”, I started considering all the races I was already signed up for and started deferring/dropping out. Lucky for me, the course limit for the SLO half marathon is 8 whole hours so even though I can’t run, I decided to walk this 13.1 anyway. And it. Was. AWESOME!!!
