Past, Present, Future

I know it’s been a while since I’ve written a post but something happened. Something BIG. After 10+ years of being a stay-at-home-mom, I got a job. A full time job. That’s a lot of hours away from home, away from my kids, away from the free will that allowed me to run whenever I wanted and to write blog posts whenever I wanted. It was a big transition at first- for me and my entire family- but now, after 5 months, I’m finally getting into a good grove.

Kinda.

The Laura of 5 months ago was so dedicated to running and working out and setting goals and running race after race after race with abandon (when I wasn’t injured, that is) and the Laura of right now is finding some challenge in staying as dedicated. Depending on my life/work balance at the moment, my motivation tends to wane and sleeping to all of 6:30am is often so much more appealing than getting up at 4:45am to get my miles in. Today’s Reason: Time

I know, I know, I’ve been negligent with blogging as of late as I’ve been so incredibly busy with life, kids, training, volunteering, and starting a new job- even with 24 hours at my disposal every day, I find it hard to accomplish all that I want to!  However, “I’m too busy!” is an excuse we all give, maybe more akin to a constant lie we tell ourselves when deciding what, to whom and how we should dedicate our precious time.

Even though I haven’t been writing about running, I have been running. With 3 weeks to go until the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in SF, I’m determined to accomplish my training- fitting it in to the rest of my life right now is certainly a challenge but I am trying and I am doing… and I have been constantly thinking about how my choices truly impact my time- my Lifetime, my Me Time, and my Running Time. Resolve to Run More

With the new year nearly here, I’ve only got one resolution for 2015: run more. This past year has been one of injury and injury recovery for me, taking me away from my normal training, normal exercising, normal eating , normal writing and I am oh so eager to get back to normal! My injuries nearly healed, I’m starting out slowly, trying to be patient and easy on myself while pushing myself to tackle new races and my third 26.2 next Spring.

I started 2014 with a fractured rib then when that was healed, injured the meniscus and MCL in my right knee, then after months of PT for the knee, was in a car accident and suffered (and am STILL suffering) a concussion.  None of the above allowed me to keep running the road and the negative emotions I had to deal with as a result were normal, I guess… it’s all tied together… hence the solitary resolution this coming new year.

Running more means I will eat right which means I’ll start losing this injury weight which means I will run better which means I will start to believe in myself again which means I’ll write more. Just one simple resolution gets me back to where I was, to the “me” I know I can be.

Running more also means setting more goals- even when I was injured I still kept completing races (totally untrained) but in 2015 I plan to actually finish them well. I’m lucky that despite my injuries, I was still selected to be race ambassador for the Surf City Marathon (and half), the San Luis Obispo Marathon (& half), and the Zooma Napa Valley Half Marathon (and 10K) so I’ve got a pretty good race calendar already set for 2015.  I plan to run the Surf City half 2/1/15, the SLO full 4/26/15, the Zooma half on 6/20/15, and you KNOW I’ll try everything in my power to run Nike SF again in October 2015!  I’m looking very forward to yet another year full of happy, yet challenging, running goals.

Bring. It. ON!

So if you’re willing to take that leap with me and resolve to run more, register for a race today, set that training plan in stone and get to work! If I can do it, we can all do it- a new year means a fresh start with 365 days full of potential and since I turned 40 this year (ick), I plan to take nothing for granted and will embrace every moment of running, resting, laughing and crying with deep appreciation.  Happiness, to me, is found in those moments- running miles while maintaining smiles resulted from doing that which I love to do. Running is hard but my life is certainly easier because of it.

And with that, dear readers, I thank you for a year of sticking with me despite the rampant injury and lack of running, for reading, commenting and “liking” all along the way… I promise next year will be back to “normal” and as awesome as ever!

Positive Sports Coaching

As soon as I returned from my fabulous vacation in Hawaii, school started for the kids and I have been oh so busy with all that that I haven’t found much time to sit still and just write. I have SO MANY OTHER things to blog about right now (race recap, more giveaways, gear reviews, Nike training update, et cetra) but last night, while I was attending a Positive Coaching Alliance workshop for my kids’ first season in soccer, I was inspired to share some of the things I learned…

After a long day of work and school followed by a hour and a half kiddo soccer practice, I was not too thrilled to attend a workshop from 7pm-9pm last night. Not. At. All. Further, as I didn’t participate in organized sports growing up I couldn’t really relate to or answer any questions that applied to the game of soccer or competition among youth. My mind kept wandering out of boredom but then I found myself taking notes and started applying the principles I was learning towards running.  (I’ll work on applying it all to the kids’ soccer too, I swear!)

My Nike Training Plan

If you follow this blog and/or my Facebook page, you know that I created a group ID in order to enter the lottery to get into the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco this October. Thanks to the power of social media, approximately 300 happy readers/runners utilized the code and our entire group was selected!!!  WOO HOO!!!

This year is the 10th anniversary of the race and will be my 4th Nike run- I did the SF full in 2011, the SF half in 2012, ran Nike DC half earlier this year, and now am getting ramped and amped up for #4!  I’m wrapping my head around training for all those hills and getting my plan together for a successful 13.1 come October 20th.  Continue reading

Run, Forrest, Run!

There’s something kinda strange about me and if you know me in real life, I think you would agree- when I find something I really like, I don’t easily let go and even start to identify with whatever that thing may be. Some call it obsession, I call it passion.

One of my first loves was radio, and I listened constantly as a kid, enjoying every genre of music, knowing all call letters and the on-air schedules of all my favorite DJs. I grew to also love singing, dancing, anything purple, red wine, fine dining, and then eventually- you guessed it- running.

I originally went to college to study acting and at USC I had to start working full time in order to afford such an expensive school yet found no money leftover for head-shots nor any time leftover to audition. I then decided go the academic route instead and when I got into film school, my absolute obsession with all things cinematic began…

Today’s Reason: Boston

As soon as I woke up on Monday morning, I started up my lap top, placed it on the stove in my kitchen, and began making my kids their school lunches while I watched the Boston Marathon. The elites were about an hour and a half in and on their way to victory, I was cheering on Kara Goucher and Shalane Flanagan and explaining to my children the importance of Boston and how much the event means to all running kind.

Just hours later, friends began texting me about the explosions at the finish line and I just couldn’t believe it… came home, turned on the TV and there it was, the horrifying images of this unbelievable tragedy… my heart broke and the tears came.

I haven’t really been able to find the words to describe how I feel- as a runner, marathoner, spectator, and American. But today, I will try my best… Continue reading
