Wine-ing Allowed

Told ya.

The above photo is of me and my two besties (Amy on the left, Andrea on the right) after crossing the finish line of my very first half marathon through Livermore, California on October 10, 2010. And on March 26, 2017 I will complete it again.

I recall thinking, “10/10/10 has just got to be good luck for my first half!” And it was! I loved running through the lush rolling hills of wine country, passing by the vineyards of all the wineries I have yet to visit, and enjoying all the post-race grapey libations the race had to offer. In just 18 days, I will complete the Livermore Half Marathon, my first half marathon since October 2015. That’s crazy!

And I am again, just like that very first 13.1 ever, nervous! I haven’t run a half in over year and am just getting back to running after a 6 month hiatus… but then there’s the wine. I love running, yes, and I love wine, oh yes. That’s actually the reason why I chose the Livermore Half as my first- The Wine! Livermore is, by far, one of my favorite places to go wine tasting here in the Bay Area. Everyone has heard of Napa, everyone has heard of Sonoma (and they are awesome too!) but I sure love the sleepy, peaceful, temperate, laid back demeanor of Livermore.

Past, Present, Future

I know it’s been a while since I’ve written a post but something happened. Something BIG. After 10+ years of being a stay-at-home-mom, I got a job. A full time job. That’s a lot of hours away from home, away from my kids, away from the free will that allowed me to run whenever I wanted and to write blog posts whenever I wanted. It was a big transition at first- for me and my entire family- but now, after 5 months, I’m finally getting into a good grove.

Kinda.

The Laura of 5 months ago was so dedicated to running and working out and setting goals and running race after race after race with abandon (when I wasn’t injured, that is) and the Laura of right now is finding some challenge in staying as dedicated. Depending on my life/work balance at the moment, my motivation tends to wane and sleeping to all of 6:30am is often so much more appealing than getting up at 4:45am to get my miles in. Yes, I realize it’s been over 3 months since I have posted- I think the above photo gives a hint as to the reason why… after my last race in November, the ball of my foot started to hurt and I ignored it.  By January, my foot was in such severe pain it couldn’t bear weight, turned purple and grew incredibly swollen so I finally stopped exercising and went to a sports podiatrist. X-rays completed, I sought 3 different opinions (because I didn’t like what ANY of them said, “What do you MEAN stop running for months???”) and even though each doctor gave me a different diagnosis, they all agreed that I had fractured the sesamoid bones that live in the ball of the foot.

Today’s Reason: Time

I know, I know, I’ve been negligent with blogging as of late as I’ve been so incredibly busy with life, kids, training, volunteering, and starting a new job- even with 24 hours at my disposal every day, I find it hard to accomplish all that I want to!  However, “I’m too busy!” is an excuse we all give, maybe more akin to a constant lie we tell ourselves when deciding what, to whom and how we should dedicate our precious time.

Even though I haven’t been writing about running, I have been running. With 3 weeks to go until the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in SF, I’m determined to accomplish my training- fitting it in to the rest of my life right now is certainly a challenge but I am trying and I am doing… and I have been constantly thinking about how my choices truly impact my time- my Lifetime, my Me Time, and my Running Time. Race Recap: Surf City Half Marathon

I know, I know, I’ve been slacking off with the blog lately, haven’t really been able to bring myself to write in light of a recent, significant death in the family… sorta kinda lost my mojo there for a bit and while things still aren’t totally back to “normal”, I’m putting all my focus and effort today towards writing this recap for the Surf City Half Marathon I ran/walked this past Sunday… here we go…

Thanks to the good people at Project Sport, I was given an entry to this race and since we have family in Southern California I thought it would be a good opportunity to go down to So Cal, visit family, then run the race- and that it was! We drove down Friday and then I left my family behind Saturday afternoon to proceed from Los Angeles to Huntington Beach for the expo and subsequent race on Sunday.

Bright and early Sunday, I boarded the shuttle from my hotel to the race start. Once I arrived and started chatting with my fellow runners (of course), I realized that my bib was seemingly Elite and gave me access to whatever wave I wanted to enter- my bib was #175 whereas the half marathoners started at #4600. I looked around for the pacers, figuring I would go with a wave that was a 2:45-3:00 group (since my training had basically come to a halt in the past few weeks given my emotional injury), finally settled into wave 11 and waited for my start.

The Journey to 40

40

I guess the sum of the last 39 years are technically my journey to 40 but it’s really just hit me in the last few months that this is really happening so as far as I’m concerned I’ve got about 3 months left to go before I plummet into The Land of 40 as the best me I can be.

40. Wow. That’s like a big number. Where did that come from? Why didn’t anyone warn me this was going to happen someday? Isn’t 40 considered half way to death? Aren’t I supposed to have all these things accomplished and figured out and DONE by 40?  Well I haven’t and I don’t and that’s that so I am pretty much freaking out over this next stage of life. New challenges, new age group… isn’t it time to stop thinking and start doing more??? Continue reading

13 Reasons Why I Love Racing

My injury is on it’s way to recovery and I am feeling very excited to start racing again! In fact, I miss racing so much that I have completely re-adjusted our summer vacation plans in order to give 100% focus to my training, getting my body/endurance/stamina back to where it was pre-injury.

Last week, my doctor gave me the okay to run/walk the 2nd half of the San Francisco Marathon at the end of July, I am beyond elated. As an ambassador for the race, my initial plan was to run the full but my injury totally shattered that dream, I was even dubious about the half given those SF hills but after hearing of my accomplishment at SLO, the doctor said “You’re definitely getting better, so go for that SF half!” so of course I will and I CAN’T WAIT!

I started racing in April 2009- that First Race Ever was a hilly trail 5K but as soon as I crossed that finish line, I was hooked. At that race, I saw other runners wearing matching shirts and decided to get a bunch of like-minded friends together to run and make our own matching shirts, then challenged my “team” to at least one race a month. Sometimes two. And, yeah, okay, sometimes three in one month- just because there are so many great races out there and just because I love racing that much!
