Wine-ing Allowed

Told ya.

The above photo is of me and my two besties (Amy on the left, Andrea on the right) after crossing the finish line of my very first half marathon through Livermore, California on October 10, 2010. And on March 26, 2017 I will complete it again.

I recall thinking, “10/10/10 has just got to be good luck for my first half!” And it was! I loved running through the lush rolling hills of wine country, passing by the vineyards of all the wineries I have yet to visit, and enjoying all the post-race grapey libations the race had to offer. In just 18 days, I will complete the Livermore Half Marathon, my first half marathon since October 2015. That’s crazy!

And I am again, just like that very first 13.1 ever, nervous! I haven’t run a half in over year and am just getting back to running after a 6 month hiatus… but then there’s the wine. I love running, yes, and I love wine, oh yes. That’s actually the reason why I chose the Livermore Half as my first- The Wine! Livermore is, by far, one of my favorite places to go wine tasting here in the Bay Area. Everyone has heard of Napa, everyone has heard of Sonoma (and they are awesome too!) but I sure love the sleepy, peaceful, temperate, laid back demeanor of Livermore.

I was lucky enough to get a bib for this race via BibRave so am also lucky enough to also share a coupon code with you if you want to join me on March 26th in beautiful Livermore Valley. Read on for more perks to look forward to…

The Gift of Fitness

No matter what controversial color your coffee cup may be, the holiday season has officially begun and just like every year prior, I am committed to getting all my holiday shopping done sooner than later; but for the first time ever, hubby and I have agreed to give gifts just to the kids and not to each other. Why?  Because we buy gifts for ourselves throughout the year anyway and only I truly know what I want! Saving stress, time, money, and wrapping paper- sounds like a Christmas miracle!

Hubby was also getting annoyed at my answer to the question, “What do you want for Christmas?”  The answer: “You know, workout stuff.” He’s over reading my mind and I’m over never getting the workout stuff that I actually want so this year I made my list, checked it twice, been really nice, and Santa Laura is getting/giving EXACTLY what I want this year all in the name of yuletide fitness! HO HO HO!!! Continue reading

Today’s Reason: Time

I know, I know, I’ve been negligent with blogging as of late as I’ve been so incredibly busy with life, kids, training, volunteering, and starting a new job- even with 24 hours at my disposal every day, I find it hard to accomplish all that I want to!  However, “I’m too busy!” is an excuse we all give, maybe more akin to a constant lie we tell ourselves when deciding what, to whom and how we should dedicate our precious time.

Even though I haven’t been writing about running, I have been running. With 3 weeks to go until the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in SF, I’m determined to accomplish my training- fitting it in to the rest of my life right now is certainly a challenge but I am trying and I am doing… and I have been constantly thinking about how my choices truly impact my time- my Lifetime, my Me Time, and my Running Time. Summer Sabbatical

Well, it’s summer- the kids are out of school, schedules are out the window, and relaxing has taken over… for the very first time, I am totally okay with that!  I love sleeping in and staying up late, and- to be completely honest- I also love taking this short break from road running.  I’ve been spending a ton of time with my kids, enjoying the outdoors, and reading lots of great books- often, the simpler life is, the happier I feel. Not to say that I can’t incorporate running into all this good summertime ju ju too, it’s just… I need a break.

However, I do have a fairly challenging half marathon this Sunday, the (very hilly) first half of The San Francisco Marathon. I just re-read my recap of this race from 2013 and now I’m officially worried. I tried to run while spending the past 3 weeks at our cabin but the elevation killed me and after every run I would fall sick for the next 36 hours so I gave up even attempting to train while there. And since we’ve been back home, here at sea level, my motivation is still seemingly on break too…

See, I ran that one time this summer!

2014 Resolutions

I don’t usually make New Year resolutions. As I’ve said before, if I’ve been doing everything the right way all year, there is no need to force myself to change things going into the new year- calendars can’t boss ME around. 2014 however, is a little different…

Don’t get me wrong, 2013 was an absolutely fantastic year! I started it off by successfully fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for a 3rd time and traveling to Washington DC to run the Nike Women’s Half with Team in Training. Great team, great race, great city, lots of running fun!

2013 Collage

In June/July, we had 3 blissful weeks of relaxing at our Pinecrest cabin, then in August took a family vacation to O’ahu, Hawaii and it was such a great time- who doesn’t LOVE Hawaii?! Kids had a blast! In September we traveled to Martha’s Vineyard to attend a family wedding where my daughter was the flower girl and my son a ring bearer- so fricking cute and so very memorable! My Nike Training Plan

If you follow this blog and/or my Facebook page, you know that I created a group ID in order to enter the lottery to get into the Nike Women’s Marathon in San Francisco this October. Thanks to the power of social media, approximately 300 happy readers/runners utilized the code and our entire group was selected!!!  WOO HOO!!!

This year is the 10th anniversary of the race and will be my 4th Nike run- I did the SF full in 2011, the SF half in 2012, ran Nike DC half earlier this year, and now am getting ramped and amped up for #4!  I’m wrapping my head around training for all those hills and getting my plan together for a successful 13.1 come October 20th.  Continue reading

Today’s Reason: The Movies

Run, Forrest, Run!

Run, Forrest, Run!

There’s something kinda strange about me and if you know me in real life, I think you would agree- when I find something I really like, I don’t easily let go and even start to identify with whatever that thing may be. Some call it obsession, I call it passion.

One of my first loves was radio, and I listened constantly as a kid, enjoying every genre of music, knowing all call letters and the on-air schedules of all my favorite DJs. I grew to also love singing, dancing, anything purple, red wine, fine dining, and then eventually- you guessed it- running.

I originally went to college to study acting and at USC I had to start working full time in order to afford such an expensive school yet found no money leftover for head-shots nor any time leftover to audition. I then decided go the academic route instead and when I got into film school, my absolute obsession with all things cinematic began…

… but if you think this post is about running movies in general, you’re wrong. Continue reading
