Thanks again to Whole Foods Northern California, I am very pleased to announce this week’s giveaway: 2 lucky winners will each receive a guaranteed spot to register for the exclusive and awesome Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco AND a $50 gift card to Whole Foods! As you may already know, I am a HUGE fan of NWM as it was my very first marathon, I am also a HUGE of fan of Whole Foods for providing some of the healthiest and yummiest grocery store food stuffs available- now that I’m training for my 5th Nike, that’s just the kind of fuel I need.  Keep on reading to find out how to enter…

(Please note that this give away is just for a guaranteed spot to register for the race, NOT a paid entry- winners will have to pay for their own entry, transportation, commemorative schwag, etc.)

Whenever I go shopping at Whole Foods, my first stop is their weekly publication (always hung conveniently by the entrance), “The Whole Deal” which contains coupons, recipes, plus lots of money and time-saving tips. As a parent, savings is good and as a runner, their high quality, natural and organic products are even better: good input = good output.

Local, organic, pesticide and hormone free!

Local, organic, pesticide and hormone free!

Whole Foods is known for their organic produce and the moment you step into a Whole Foods store, the beauty of their fruits and veggies shines- no pesticides, mostly local, and sustainable. While most people are aware that Whole Foods supports organic farming, many don’t know that Whole Foods also touts the Four Pillars of Healthy Eating and offer in-store “Healthy Eating Specialists” who will walk you through the store and show you where the deals are as well share more of the Whole Foods philosophy behind lifelong, healthy eating.

Whole Foods asked that I share some of my training fuel tips and, honestly, I believe that “simpler is better” when it comes to eating and running.  I usually opt for a lot of veggie-heavy salads, fresh fruit, and green juices that I make in my Vitamix at home. Here’s a recipe for my favorite green smoothie that I enjoy before and after any distance run as it is filling and high in vitamins and micro nutrients:

Laura’s “Let’s Go For a Run!” Green Smoothie
1 cup fresh spinach
1 cup fresh kale
1 cup water
1/2 cup fresh Orange Juice
1 cup frozen strawberries/raspberries/blueberries/whatever fruit you like
1 banana
1 carrot
1/2 an apple, sliced
Grated ginger to taste
1 tablespoon cold pressed flax oil

Blend spinach, kale, water, and OJ together until smooth, adding more/less water and OJ as you like for consistency and/or taste.  Once smooth, add in all ingredients through ginger, blend until smooth, pour into cup and stir in flax oil. DELISH!

I also admit sometimes I’m lazy pressed for time and can’t always bother with making my own juice, but Whole Foods really makes it easy for me to get my daily green juice dose!

My fave!

My fave! Squeezed fresh in-store!

Sometimes, I admit, I can’t even bring myself to make a salad and Whole Foods makes my life SO easy! Lots of grab-and-go, oh so fresh and healthy options!  I love being lazy efficient!

In addition to lots of organic produce, I also purchase bulk whole grain carbs, wild-caught fish, non-GMO meat and poultry for dinners and that gives me all the fuel I need to push the miles- it’s all about simplicity and balance. Plant heavy, nutrient dense WHOLE foods that are hormone and pesticide free plus easy and quick to make work best for me- dinner is always 4 to 6 ounces of lean protein, one serving of whole grains, plus a big salad and fruit for dessert! Great for the whole family!

Bon Appetit!

Thanks to Whole Foods I have tons of healthy options to fill my belly and fuel my miles and also, thanks to Whole Foods, 2 lucky readers have a chance to win an guaranteed entry to the Nike Women’s Half Marathon in San Francisco this October PLUS a $50 gift card to Whole Foods to stock up on all your training needs!  Here’s how to enter…

My favorite pre-race meal is a natural peanut butter and local honey sandwich made on whole wheat bread (from my bread maker). I can get all these wholesome, natural foods at Whole foods!!

Right now, my favorite pre-run meal is overnight oats with PB or almond butter. I can’t get enough. If I don’t do that, I usually do a rice cake with almond butter, banana, and sea salt. I gotta have my nut butters to start my day. LOL. Your smoothie sounds so refreshing! I’ll be bookmarking this to make it soon 🙂

A good ‘ol handful of almonds! But almonds, and almonds only. Other nuts do NOT sit well (I’m lookin’ at you, peanuts and pecans). Sometimes if I’m felling wild, I’ll throw in a mini box of Sunmaid raisins. Nothing is more energizing than healthy fats in my opinion!
