Race Recap: Rock n’ Roll San Jose

I was lucky enough to “acquire” a bib for the Rock n’ Roll San Jose half marathon and this past Sunday, I ran the sucker, crossed the finish line and am proud to say that my half marathon number 15 is officially running history! WOOOO!!!

Now that I have this brand new, super awesome website to play with, I had the brilliant idea that I would post this recap all in video clips just for fun… so here you go… you tell me if videos are fun because as you will see, the people around me thought I was crazy.  If you ever see someone holding a camera up to their face and talking to it during a race, just know that that’s a blogger!

HUGE race with over 20 corrals! As soon as I separate from my BRF Erica, I never saw her again until after the race!

Videos are great but not as great as a good self-portrait-while-running!

Videos are great but I’m still a sucker for that self-portrait-while-running!

Rock n' Roll races just love their freeways! What is up with that?!

Mile 8, here comes the pain...

Motivation spectators at mile 9 and then just yards away, right after taking this picture, my tummy revolted and I puked on the side of the road! And then again right before the 10 mile mark! ACK!!!

Run, Laura, Run!!!

Run, Laura, Run!!!

Ran like crazy in the last 5K feeling very, very dizzy and nauseous. Crossed the finish line in 2:33 somehow (which is totally crazy as I was with the 2:45 pace group miles 8-10!), went towards the tub of water bottles, grabbed one, bent over, puked out some water and the next thing I opened my eyes and I was on the ground with an EMT! I totally passed out for a couple seconds! Whoa!  They took me over to the medical tent, told me to take off my hat, and put bags of ice on the back of my neck and in between my knees. I sat there for about 20 minutes until my tummy stopped rolling and my head stopped spinning.

Truth is, it was so hot before the race started and my mouth was so dry that I finished pretty much all of my water before even crossing the starting line.  At every water stop, I took 2-3 cups of (too much) water (the water stop H2O tasted DISGUSTING- that may have had something to do with my nausea!), plus I was trying a new fuel.  Oops.

Major lesson learned even at my fifteenth 13.1 go around- nothing new on race day, and when it’s hot, get your hydration in the night before, don’t try to overcompensate on the day of! It will only hurt, not help you!

Neverthless, I of course got the beer I promised myself at mile 10 and armed with a shiny new medal and another half under my water belt, all was right again with the world.

Done, Laura, done!

Done, Laura, done!

Moral of the story: it’s all about Nike!!!  2 weeks to go…
